No, a fly reel is for fly fishing. If you prefer to use this kind of reel instead of a fixed spool reel for course fishing, then you need to get yourself a centre pin reel. Centre pin reels are great for float fishing, and in particular trotting on fast moving waters. Check out the Australian made reels Alvey, most of their reels are for sea fishing, however they do have a few that are for general purpose use also, i.e. course fishing. They are generally made from Bakelite and are very reasonably priced, see them at http://www.sharnbrooktackle.com and search for centre pin reels, the cheapest is the Alvey 40B-L – Beginners Reel for about £21 + vat, and although it is described as a beginners reel, it is also ideal for the experienced casual angler. Centre pin reels can be very expensive, so I would definitely recommend Alvey as they are very reasonably priced, well made and built to last.

No – it makes the universe explode.
You can use it for coarse fishing though.
