The only wood I have ever used to make a rod is split bamboo. These rods can get very expensive very quickly. As for the guides, those thingys the line runs through, you can order a complete set through several catalogs. Before you get started, I would go to the library and see about getting a copy of Custom Advanced Rod Building by Dale P Clemens. It will give you all you need to know about wrapping on the guides and the proper spacing for them. Also, as for a handle, complete handle sections can be purchased along with a reel seat for any type of reel. There are several measurements you will need to have before you get any of these things.

Yes, split bamboo rod blanks can be VERY expensive and are almost always fly rods now, which are just what you do not want. Do yourself a favor and begin with a good quality fiberglass or graphite blank(main shaft of the rod). Bamboo requires special wrapping thread and techniques or you could ruin a $500+ item in a hurry.
Go to http://www.cabelas.com and click on the fishing link in the left-hand column and then start looking at the items under Tackle Craft. Order a catalog from them, too. Their Spring catalogs contain the rod-building materials and kits and are in effect until the next spring.

ok since you answered my question so kindly about karate… you said it was a striking art, as my senseis said karate means ‘empty hand’ and emplies fighting without weapons, and is NOT limited to strikes… so either shows what you know or shows what my senseis know… either way all i learned from karate was balance which isnt much considering i was in karate for 8 years total

Buddy I am 60 years old and I have made a number of rods, fly, bait and spinning, go to Walmart for a rod for now. I say this because it appears you know very little about fishing rods. If you really want to make a rod, and it is not that hard if you know what you are doing, go get some books on rodbuilding and read up on the subject, you will be a lot happier with your results.
